Virginia Department of Transportation Hours : Monday through Friday 7 am to 3:30 pm The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is responsible for building, maintaining and operating the State’s roads, bridges and tunnels. Through the Commonwealth Transportation Board, it also provides funding for airports, seaports, rail and public transportation. VDOT divides the State into nine districts, each which oversees maintenance and construction on the State-maintained highways, bridges and tunnels in its region. Floyd County is part of the Salem District. Transportation Department Field Office: 1-800-367-7623 If resolution to a citizen problem cannot be resolved with the respective area headquarters, calls can be directed to the Residency Administrator at (276) 728-2813, who oversees Floyd and Carroll Counties. Primary road funds, such as for Route 8 and Route 221, are administered through VDOT, with recommendations from the County Board of Supervisors. Construction and maintenance issues on secondary roads are handled by the local Board of Supervisors. A six-year plan of action is reviewed every year through a public hearing process for citizen input on secondary road projects. To establish a Business Greenbox site, an agreement must be signed prior to the delivery of the Greenbox(es). The fee is dependent on the number of Greenboxes and the frequency of pick-ups and will be invoiced monthly. All invoices are due 30 days from the date of invoice. Failure to pay for services when they are due shall cause interest at 1.5% per month to accrue and the user of said services shall be responsible for attorney fees and all costs of collection. No further services will be provided during any period of non-payment and services may be declined if the user has failed to pay previous billings in a timely fashion. Our Mission The Mission of Floyd County Building Inspection Department is to provide the very best building inspection service and to administer county ordinances in a friendly, courteous, and professional manner, which ensures the health, safety, and welfare of Floyd County citizens. How to Schedule an Inspection Inspections may be scheduled Monday-Friday by calling (540) 745-9359. A 24 hour notice must be given in advance on ALL inspections. NO inspections will be made on the same day of the call in. It is helpful if you give us your building permit number and the name of the owner of the project. Completion of Work When you obtain your building permit work must begin within six (6) months or the permit will become invalid. After the six (6) month period a new permit will need to be reissued, no refunds will be given on invalid permits. 1. Building Plans Residential: A set of floor/roof truss specs must be available on the job at the time of framing inspection for completion of the inspection. All installation instructions for all gas appliances must be kept with the appliance for rough inspection and kept with the appliance until the final inspection. Commercial: All plans must be submitted to our office and approved before issuance of permits. 2. Erosion Control Plans: Commercial: Submit 3 plans here in our office and we will submit 1 copy to Skyline Soil and Water Conservation District. All plans have to be approved before any permits will be issued. No construction can be started until approval. 3. Flood Elevation Certificate: If your project is located in the floodplain, you may need to employ a surveyor to issue an elevation certificate showing that your floor will be one foot above flood elevation. Erosion and Sediment Control When disturbing 10,000 square feet or more of land an erosion and sediment permit and plan is required before grading is started. Exception: For single family homes, an agreement in lieu of a plan may be substituted for an erosion and sediment plan. The Floyd County Volunteer Lifesaving and First Aid Squad was formed. Thirty three citizens agreed to staff the squad. The all volunteer squad provided this service until A DECLINE IN VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED THE COUNTY TO GIVE ASSISTANCE TO THE VOLUNTEER STAFF WITH PAID PERSONNEL in 2003. THE COUNTY CONTRACTED WITH CARILION TRANSPORT SERVICE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. DUE TO THE RISING COST IT WAS DECIDED TO ESTABLISH A SERVICE WITHIN THE COUNTY TO ASSIST THE VOLUNTEER STAFF. In the fall of 2004 the Floyd County Emergency Medical Service was formed. This service would hire county employees to provide basic and advanced life support service twenty four hours per day, seven days a week when volunteer personnel are not able to respond. If you are skilled in construction, maintenance, the trades, but want to turn your attention to serving the community and even becoming earning a pension, we might have the perfect next job for you! This position has two primary areas of responsibility. First, they will serve as our skilled maintenance workers, being responsible for the care and maintenance of the county buildings and property. They are responsible for inspecting public buildings and grounds, making sure they are safe and in good working order. This includes handling maintenance tasks themselves and working with other staff and contractors as needed. This may include light electrical work, light plumbing services, carpentry, masonry, drywall, mechanical, painting, and other mechanical trades. Will also be responsible for the removal of snow and treatment of icy surfaces. Some work on roofs and ladders will be required. Placement of street signs throughout the county is also a part of this position. In addition to handling maintenance work, this employee will work as a building official technical assistant. In this role, they will assist the building official in conducting inspections as requested, and work under their direct supervision.
