Completion of Work:
When you obtain your building permit work must begin within six (6) months or the permit will become invalid. After the six (6) month period a new permit will need to be reissued, no refunds will be given on invalid permits.​
How to Schedule an Inspection:
Inspections may be scheduled Monday-Friday by calling (540) 745-9359. A 24 hour notice must be given in advance on ALL inspections. NO inspections will be made on the same day of the call in. It is helpful if you give us your building permit number and the name of the owner of the project.

1. Building Plans
-
Residential: A set of floor/roof truss specs must be available on the job at the time of framing inspection for completion of the inspection. All installation instructions for all gas appliances must be kept with the appliance for rough inspection and kept with the appliance until the final inspection.

Commercial: All plans must be submitted to our office and approved before issuance of permits.
2. Erosion Control Plans:

Commercial: Submit 3 plans here in our office and we will submit 1 copy to Skyline Soil and Water Conservation District. All plans have to be approved before any permits will be issued. No construction can be started until approval.
3. Flood Elevation Certificate:
-
If your project is located in the floodplain, you may need to employ a surveyor to issue an elevation certificate showing that your floor will be one foot above flood elevation.​​
Erosion and Sediment Control
When disturbing 10,000 square feet or more of land an erosion and sediment permit and plan is required before grading is started.
Exception:
For single family homes, an agreement in lieu of a plan may be substituted for an erosion and sediment plan.
Ponds, Creek Crossing & Wet Lands
If you are building a pond, creek crossing, or disturbing wet lands, a permit may be required from the Army Corps of Engineers. Please contact Jennifer S. Frye at 1-540-344-1498
Flood Plain:
If you are building in the 100 flood plain area, please contact the building official for permit regulations.​​​
Manufactured Home Park
A manufactured home park consists of three or more homes on the same lot. You may view the Floyd County Mobile Home Ordinance by clicking here or you may pick up a copy at our office. We will be glad to sit down with you and discuss your plans and the requirements of the ordinance.

When reporting a damaged or missing road sign, please provide the following details to help us address the issue efficiently:

Provide the nearest cross streets or a specific address.

Type of Sign:

Specify the type of sign (e.g., Stop sign, Yield sign, Speed Limit sign, Street Name sign).

Description of the Damage:

Beyond Repair: The sign is severely damaged and cannot be used anymore (e.g., heavily bent, cracked, or broken).

Pulled Out of Ground: The signpost has been uprooted or knocked over.

Missing: The sign is completely missing from its designated spot.

Any other details that might help us understand the situation better (e.g., nearby landmarks, time of the incident if known, or any suspicious activities observed).

Mapping
What is “GIS”?
GIS stands for Geographic Information System. It is a means of displaying and analyzing data that can be referenced geographically. GIS can take data that has been stored in tables, give it geographic references, which can then be displayed graphically on a map.

How does the Floyd County government use the GIS mapping?
The GIS mapping database is relied upon heavily by the County government. Generally speaking, all official “spatial” or map-related data and records of Floyd County government are being made to the public; including all land parcels which are currently being mapped and made available to the public.

There will be charge for printing maps due to the use of time and supplies that are involved. There are two main sizes of maps for sale:
34×44 – $10.00
22×34 – $8.00

Maps are available at the Emergency Services Office at 120 West Oxford Street or from the Registrars Office located at 100 East Main Street (Courthouse – 2nd floor)

Maps can be mailed by sending $2.00 for shipping and handling plus the cost of the map size ordered to: Emergency Services, P. O. box 218, Floyd, Virginia 24091. Maps are usually mailed within 24 hours.
