The Floyd County Volunteer Lifesaving and First Aid Squad was formed. Thirty three citizens agreed to staff the squad. The all volunteer squad provided this service until A DECLINE IN VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED THE COUNTY TO GIVE ASSISTANCE TO THE VOLUNTEER STAFF WITH PAID PERSONNEL in 2003. THE COUNTY CONTRACTED WITH CARILION TRANSPORT SERVICE FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. DUE TO THE RISING COST IT WAS DECIDED TO ESTABLISH A SERVICE WITHIN THE COUNTY TO ASSIST THE VOLUNTEER STAFF. In the fall of 2004 the Floyd County Emergency Medical Service was formed. This service would hire county employees to provide basic and advanced life support service twenty four hours per day, seven days a week when volunteer personnel are not able to respond. Tropical Storm Debby Advisory - Immediate Action Required Floyd County, VA – Tropical Storm Debby is expected to impact our region with massive amounts of rainfall and high wind gusts over the next 24-48 hours. The potential for flash flooding is extremely high, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas. Key Safety Reminders: Turn Around, Don’t Drown: Do not attempt to drive through flooded roadways. Even a few inches of moving water can sweep away your vehicle. If you live in a flood-prone area: We strongly recommend that you find alternate shelter immediately. Do not wait until the storm intensifies, as it may be too late to safely evacuate. Generator Safety: If you are using a generator, ensure it is placed outside and in a well-ventilated area. Never run a generator in an enclosed space such as a garage, basement, or inside your home. Doing so can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning, which is deadly and difficult to detect. Additionally, improper use of generators can cause fires, so keep them away from flammable materials and follow all safety instructions. Additional Precautions: Secure outdoor furniture, trash cans, and any other objects that could become airborne in high winds. Charge all electronic devices and have a backup power source if possible. Keep an emergency kit ready with necessary supplies, including water, food, medications, and important documents. Please stay tuned to local news stations and the Floyd County Emergency Management social media channels for updates. Your safety is our top priority. Stay safe, Floyd County.
