According to Wildlife Resources and the experts at BearWise, “bears’ internal alarm clocks start ringing in March. After not eating or drinking for several months, it’s time for water, stretching and wandering around”. Given this heightened level of activity, we thought it would be a great time to share the BearWise At-Home Checklist about how to ensure you know best practices as it relates to living in a community with bears.

The Floyd County Preliminary Groundwater Assessment summary slides presented by Virginia Tech faculty at the March 25 Board meeting are attached below. The full in-person presentation is available on the official Floyd County YouTube channel here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7bxiEblN9c&t=31s&pp=ygUXZmxveWQgY291bnR5IGdvdmVybm1lbnQ%3D. Please note that the presentation begins at 1 hour 56 minutes into the meeting.

This study is an important first step in understanding our groundwater resources, including recharge and developing a “water budget.” It highlights that the County has mostly good soils for infiltration and lots of forests, both of which provide for generally good recharge. But recharge does drop substantially in severe droughts.  When the full written report, including recommendations is completed, it will also be posted online.
