Floyd County Emergency Management – Weather Update

Floyd County Emergency Management is closely monitoring the potential for severe weather today (Monday, March 16) in coordination with the National Weather Service in Blacksburg.

At this time, Floyd County is in a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) area for severe weather. This means that isolated severe storms are possible, but the greater threat is expected east of the Blue Ridge.

What to Expect Today

• Gusty winds outside of storms may reach 35–50 mph

• Isolated severe thunderstorms are possible this afternoon

• Storms could produce damaging wind gusts, hail, and a very small chance of an isolated tornado

These winds could:

• Blow around unsecured outdoor objects

• Cause tree limbs to fall

• Lead to isolated power outages

Important Note

The highest risk for severe storms is expected along and east of the Blue Ridge, meaning areas farther east of Floyd County have a higher threat level.

There is no cause for alarm, but residents should take a few simple preparedness steps:

• Secure loose outdoor items

• Stay weather aware throughout the day

• Make sure you have a way to receive weather alerts

• Be prepared for brief power outages if winds increase
